Welcome to GracePoint Church Kikuyu.
Writing in 1 Timothy 3: 15, the apostle Paul identifies the church in three ways that largely inform the structure, doctrinal emphasis, mission and general outlook. Here then are the four distinctives that Paul mentions in verse 15 that I hope you are likely to see at GracePoint Church.
- Household of God. The term household refers to family, often extended and including all who live in the shared space under one leader. Paul identifies the church as family and we endeavor to have that family outlook. In a natural family, there is a leadership, there is a membership, there is a way in and a way out. There are shared resources and there is a commitment to help and support one another. We think of ourselves as a family. The possessive case ‘of’ denotes that we belong to God and our accountability is ultimately to Him. Our elders and deacons are servants rather than Lords of the household.
- Church of the Living God. This is a helpful reminder that although we are a family, we are not just another social entity. We are not a club or association. We are not a chama or fellowship of like minded folks – we are the church of the living God. That has massive implications on what we eat (The word of God), how we live (as children of God) and what we hope for ultimately (to be united with our father). We are a work of God, who said in Mark’s Gospel that He will build His Church and the gates of hades will not prevail against us. We do not exist for our own but we belong to God and we exist as and for His Mission.
- Pillar and Foundation of Truth. Because we belong to God, he has positioned us in the world and in a particular location as a pillar and foundation of the Gospel. Our mission then is to hold out the truth of the gospel to the watching world at a time of so much error and misinformation. We call our immediate surrounding to the old truths of scripture through careful exegesis and exposition of the Bible Sunday after Sunday and in the middle of the week.
The context of the passage are instructions on how God’s church should be run including qualifications for elders and deacons. Paul is clear about how God’s people ought to conduct themselves as a church. And the resources for doing that is what He concludes – the mystery of the gospel in verse 16.
“He appeared in the flesh,
was vindicated by the Spirit,
was seen by angels,
was preached among the nations,
was believed on in the world,
was taken up in glory.”
This shapes the life and ministry of GracePoint Church.
